The recent remarks made by former President Donald Trump, suggesting that Gaza should ultimately be ethnically cleansed and turned into a resort not only disregard the deep-rooted struggles of the Palestinian people, but they also undermine the sanctity of the land, which holds historical, spiritual, and cultural significance to millions. For us as Muslim philanthropists, it’s a critical moment to reaffirm our commitment to Gaza, and instead, we must focus on meaningful, grassroots support for the Palestinian people through local Middle Eastern-based NGOs on the front line that are dedicated to alleviating suffering and advocating for justice.
Gaza is not just a piece of land; it is a symbol of resistance, resilience, and struggle. As a city with a rich history, Gaza has been home to Palestinians for centuries, holding significant religious and cultural heritage. For Muslims, the sacredness of the region is undeniable. Gaza’s plight is tied to the broader Palestinian cause, rooted in the 1948 Nakba, the displacement of Palestinians from their homes and land, and the subsequent ongoing occupation and blockade. Every inch of Gaza is filled with the memories and dreams of those who long for peace, justice, and freedom.
Trump’s recent comments suggest that Gaza could be traded as a commodity or part of a larger deal, which is not only insensitive but deeply disrespectful to the suffering of the Palestinian people. Gaza, like all lands, cannot be reduced to a political bargaining chip. It is a sacred place where lives have been lost, families have been torn apart, and yet, the determination for justice remains unwavering.
Philanthropy plays a vital role in humanitarian crises, especially when political solutions are slow to materialise. As Muslim philanthropists, we are called upon to stand in solidarity with those who are oppressed and to support those on the front lines of humanitarian aid. The situation in Gaza is dire, and while governments and international bodies may fail to act decisively, there are numerous NGOs operating in the region that are doing critical work.
By supporting Middle Eastern-based NGOs, we ensure that our contributions go directly to the people who need it the most. These organisations are not just addressing the immediate needs of food, water, shelter, and medical care, but they are also fighting for the dignity and human rights of the Palestinian people. They offer education, mental health support, legal assistance, and community development initiatives, helping to build resilience and empower the next generation of Palestinians.
Gaza is our collective responsibility, and we must continue to stand with the Palestinian people in their fight for justice and freedom. It is a call for all of us to take action, to provide meaningful support to the NGOs on the front lines, and to advocate for the rights of the oppressed. The Palestinian cause is not just a political issue; it is a moral one, and we must never allow it to be treated as a commodity or bargaining tool. The dignity of Gaza, and the rights of its people, must always remain non-negotiable.
By supporting Middle Eastern-based NGOs, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those who have endured unimaginable hardship. It is our duty to ensure that Gaza’s future is one of hope, resilience, and justice—not one that is up for sale.
This is why we are convening the Global Donors Forum (GDF) in Istanbul on the 14th-16th April 2025, a unique platform bringing together high-level senior leadership from Muslim charities and philanthropy organisations. The GDF will host vital conversations, fostering discussions that lead to practical solutions, enhanced networking, and strengthened collaboration. Book now to join the conversation.
